Did Someone Say Multifaceted Digital Trends?

It seems there is no end to the war amongst the digital giants. This is no surprise as recent report reveals the increase in the number of people around the world using social media; despite fears of privacy. In his latest contribution for We Are Social and Hootsuite as part of Global Digital series, Simon Kemp offered us some stunning figures. In the first quarter of 2018, the digital native population grew by more than 100 million, with the total approaching 3.3 billion by end of March. 

 

 

 

 

Essential Findings  

 

According to We Are Social, internet users have risen by 276 million reaching a total of 4.087 billion. Recent stats reveal that the mobile industry experienced about 2% growth in users in the first quarter of 2018. However, the actual growth figure is uncertain; as GSMA Intelligence recalibrated its dataset in February 2018. Even so, there are more than 5 billion people with a mobile phone across the world, with 6 out of 10 having a smartphone. This is certainly a significant boost for the mobile phone industry. For the first time in the first quarter of 2018, there was a 14% increase (3189 million) of mobile phone users accessing social media via their mobile phones. With the total standing at 3.087 billion at the start of the second quarter of 2018, the number of people accessing social media via mobile phones has exceeded 3 billion. The image below is a snapshot of the upsurge among the active digital natives.

Significant Changes

 

With these figures, you can imagine why internet giant Google has decided to proceed with its plans of rolling out the next phase of its mobile first index later this summer. With the effect of mobile-first indexing, Google will be ranking website based on how well they perform on mobile ranking, rather than desktop.  

 

As Google had initiated its mobile first index plan back in October 2017, with a handful of websites, an announcement was anticipated by a significant amount of brands with the search engine moving large numbers of websites to mobile-first indexing. 

 

What does this mean for websites that are not ready for the move? There ‘s no need for unease, as they will receive a notification in the Google Search Console. Here is footage with further details.
